1. Polly Taylor, 1929, Woman
2. California Polly.taylor@attbi.com  2a, No
3. Chronic Asthma, Emphysema
4. Age 65 when Medicare kicked in and I could afford doctor visits and testing.
5. Unsure because I've had asthma since childhood and thought it was just more chronic asthma
6. SOB for too long after a rather mild upper respiratory infection
7. Not then, given Ventolin.  Later given a pulmonologist's name by a friend with diagnosed COPD.
8. Chest x-ray and pulmonary function tests.  He also did a blood screening and general history.
9. The pulmonologist.  Given about as much information as I could absorb at once.  He was very direct about the
seriousness of the condition.
10. Don't know what that means.  He gave me a lot of free samples and we tried them out for a week or so at a time.
11. Serevent 2 puffs morning and evening.  Combivent 2 puffs morning and noon.  Albuterol 2 puffs afternoon and evening.
12. Aerobid seemed useless.  But I was very reluctant to take any steroidal things.
13. Nothing other than the MDIs.  Occasional Zantac for the gas the MDIs give me.
14. N/a
15. No.  Never have.
16. Proventil gave me hives (go figure, Ventolin and generic Albuterol don't).  Atrovent alone gave me muscles spasms and
headache.
17. Pulmonologist recommended returning to exercise (Nordic Track) I had quit when my SOB got bad.  He also encouraged
me to apply to a dyspnea study.  He knew I couldn't afford Re-hab.  I spent a year in the study, learned a lot, got a lot of free testing, and developed a walking program I have stayed with pretty well since.
18. No.
19. No.
20. Hate heat and my housemate, with end stage cancer, needs the house at about 80.  I shut myself up in my bedroom or
office a good bit.  Sleeplessness is a real plague for me.
21. Self-employed as fully as I have the energy for – maybe 12 hours a week.  My Social Security doesn't make it.
22. No.
23. Just dropped private Medicare supplement because they raised the rates by 50% in honor of my 70th birthday.
Joined an HMO.  So far so good.  I don't know what will happen if I need unusual treatment.
24. No.  LVRS is something I want to keep in mind for the future.  The NETT study in San Diego went over my records
and said I wasn't sick enough yet.
25. Sure.  Limited energy, but glad to talk.  Phone: 415/586-9061.
26. I'm delighted with the site/e-mail.  My housemate commented that she was astonished at what I was learning, as
she thought I already knew as much as there was to know about the disease!
27. Smoked from late teens to late forties.  Quit for 20 years.  Then was diagnosed.  They said quitting would avoid
the disease.  They lied.
28. Yes.  Walk over half an hour, over a mile (usually about 1.5) three to four times a week.  Mostly flat or down hill.
Can no longer make the hills, but I live in San Francisco.
29. I don't know – with my lifelong allergic asthma and mold sensitivity as part of Environmental Illness, I've avoided
antibiotics as much as possible, although I have had penicillin a few times and found it effective.
30. Yes.  My brother also has emphysema.  The test came back negative.
