~~May 2001~~ EFFORTS 2ND RALLY FOR RECOGNITION Washington, DC Capitol, May 7th, 2001
Hosted by
There was a tremendous turnout by member and their family at this, our second annual rally. I think we doubled the numbers of last year. I could almost say that everthing went perfect, we couldn't have asked for better weather. We had quite a few of our elected officials represented and Senator Daniel Akaka, Hawaii actuall took the time to visit with us. He had no idea what emphysema was and was enlightened by our Janitor :-) (these are listed on the website). Also had some wonderful speakers who gave us lots of encouragement to keep working toward our goals. As we did last year, we learned many things that will help us organize our EFFORTS Rally For Recognition 2002 which is already underway. I would urge anyone who didn't have the opportunity to attend either of our Rally's to make every effort to do so nex year. We all did lots of work during the year, including all our members who wrote many letters, but when you get there and get to enjoy time spent with other EFFORTS members, it's worth all the work. That adrenalin gets to flowin' and you just almost forget you're sick, it's like a wonderful, big, old family reunion with lots of huggin' and laughin' and sharing stories. Plans are still for the first week in May since we now have a National Emphysema Awareness Week the second week in May. More information and photos of the Rally can be seen at http://www.emphysema.net/2ndrally.html

Sarasota or Kissimmee,
Florida January 12, 2001
Hosted by Location: Der Dutchman (Amish family style, non-smoking restaurant) It was a long day— four hour drive for us each way—but it was sure worth it. We didn't get home until almost 8:00. Larry picked out a great place for lunch and Bob did a great job in putting it together. My hat is off to both of you. But, what made it really special was all the wonderful people who were there. and, as Rosemary said—it is always great to renew old friendships and make new ones. These small luncheons aka get-togethers are great and do not take away from the larger events, such as the Rally, that is being planned. If you have people interested in getting together, just do it! The rewards are tremendous. Ciao, Caro Those Attending:

Redmond,Washington May 7, 2000 Mini Meeting~Social Gathering Hosted by There was a mini-meeting here in Redmond,WA this past Sunday. Of course, it was very social! Pat Laney and her husband Orv and my husband, Bob (who has COPD) have become good friends. To add to this group, Sue Heggen and her husband, Larry, arrived here in Seattle for Sue's evaluation at UW Med Ctr for LVRS this past week. (Sue and Larry are from Montana.) It was great to visit both for the COPD'rs and for the caregivers. We look forward to seeing them all again. Bob also begins his evaluation at the UW this week (also for LVRS). But, for sure, he will go through the Pulmonary Rehav. I cannot tell you how informed we have become because of EFFORTS. It is AWESOME! Kudos to all the people who run the site, and same to all the people who post all the time. I feel like we know you all personally. |

~EFFORTS RALLY FOR
RECOGNITION~ Washington DC Capitol~~May 9th, 2000
Hosted by There was a tremendous turnout by members and their family at this rally. Despite a few glitches the night before, everything turned out just fine. There was a code orange weather warning for the day of the Rally, but that didn't stop us—everyone braved the weather for the entire day and returned home safe and sound. There were several prominent speakers. Even though we didn't draw a huge crowd, we WERE heard by many, gave out brochures from EFFORTS and the American Lung Association. Local Channel 8 TV covered the event. This was truly a grass roots movement, and we learned many things that will help us organize our EFFORTS Rally For Recognition 2001 which will be underway very soon. Plans are still for the first week in May since we now have a National Emphysema Awareness Week the second week in May. Photos of the Rally can be seen at http:members.aol.com/angel121/efforts.html. |

Mini-Convention Richmond,
Kentucky July 1999 "The First Gathering" Hosted by What started out to be a "little get-together" for some of our EFFORTS Family turned into a real mini-convention and probably was the steering convention for many other "meetings" around the U.S. and other countries thanks to Glenda Jones, Carolyn Oglethorpe and others that were involved in putting things together. There was lots of talking, laughing and hugging going on. They even had a "Best Dressed Tank" contest with a trophy as a prize, thanks to Patti Gibson. They wanted to hold a scooter race, but the weather didn't permit it. There were also several prominent guest speakers. Media coverage included television and articles in two Kentucky newspapers. |

Any members in the tri-state area, or anywhere else for that matter, who want to have lunch, we will be at the Red Lobster on Rt 211 in Middletown, NY on July 29th at 12:30. That's a Monday. Any problems, want a different place or day let me know ,we aim to please. Please send me an e-mail if you can come. lwatson@HVC.RR.COM
More directions to Red Lobster: If you are coming from the north get off at exit 120w, merge with traffic, you can't turn there, go down two lights and make a left hand turn into the shopping plaza. There are three stores Walmart, Kohl's and K-Mart. The Red Lobster is at the end in front of the K-Mart. If you are coming from the south, Newburg or Rockland area, take 17 West, off of 84 or the NYS Thruway at Harriman exit, and get off at Exit 120. This exit ends in a T-intersection. Turn left at the end of the ramp and again, the shopping plaze is two lights down on the left. The phone number is 845-343-3228. I got directions of of www.anywho.com. Put in the name of the restaurant and Middletown, NY. I'd post the link but it is huge. Anna sent this lind from Yahoo. So far we have about six coming.
